![]() That version had the Napoleonic imagery with cardboard pieces in metal clip stands. Those pieces were cardboard and not plastic, (but, they were red and blue just like the ones I got) and, the soldiers depicted on the cardboard wore contemporary (for the time) uniforms, not ones from the Napoleonic Era.īy 1942, the game “Stratego” was in production in the Netherlands. Instead of 80 pieces on a 10×10 square board, it had 72 pieces on a 10×9 board. The 1910 version of the game was very similar to the one I unwrapped Christmas morning. A French company began selling the game as “L’Attaque” by 1910. Eden filed for a patent in November, 1908 and it was issued in 1909. In fact, the earliest version of “Stratego” was invented by a Frenchwoman, Mademoiselle Hermance Eden in the 1880s. Though I’d never heard of “Stratego” before all those commercials, the game had been around since before the World War I. (Listen, if you’ve read these, you know what to expect. And, unlike some other Christmas highlights, this one was actually worth the excitement. Come that Christmas morning, “Stratego” was one of the highlights of the day. Loads and loads of cool looking commercials for the game leading up to that magical time of year when we got lots of great stuff, Christmas. ( Everybody had “Monopoly”, for example, meaning that, no matter which members of the gang happened to be around, you could play it.) Exactly when I got “Stratego” is lost in the mists of time, but the why remains clear. ![]() I suspect the reason “Stratego” didn’t get played more often was that I was one of the few members of the gang who had a set. Somewhere in the middle sat, perhaps, the most interesting of those games, “Stratego”. Others we played a few times and tired of. Some, like “Monopoly” and “Risk”, we played a lot. The spotter can also attack using the standard attacking method. As I’ve mentioned in previous blogs, we played a lot of board games as kids. If you guessed incorrectly, the defending piece stays where it was and the spotter returns to the square where he was. If you guess correctly the piece loses, but the spotter does not take the place of the losing piece, and returns to the square where he was. Tap the enemy piece, tell your opponent you are “spotting” and guess the rank of the piece you are attacking. Spotters may move and then attempt to attack and capture any piece on the square in front of it. The infiltrator can also attack using the normal attacking method, but remember he is the lowest rank (0) and even loses to the spy. The infiltrator can infiltrate bombs and the flag. If you guessed incorrectly, the defending piece stays where it was and the infiltrator returns to the square where he was. If you guess correctly the piece loses, but the infiltrator does not take the place of the losing piece he returns to the square where he was. Tap the enemy piece, tell your opponent you are infiltrating, and guess the rank of the piece you are attacking. In enemy territory only (farthest four rows away from where your pieces were set-up), the infiltrator can infiltrate/attack an enemy playing piece from one or two squares away (both horizontally and vertically, but not diagonally). Setup, take one less scout when setting up your army so you still only have 40 pieces. The infiltrator is an optional piece that can be used in the Stratego Original game. Infiltrator (Stratego Original Version Only) I am wondering if you can implement them. Hi, I just bought the board game of Stratego and I see they have actually introduced some new units.
